Celebrating May Day

Today was the perfect May Day. Mamas and their daughters wore beautiful dresses, some of boys wore colourful capes. The children gathered around a picnic table and wove together flower crowns. The crowns were made of willow branches and covered in balsam root flowers, lilacs flowers, daffodils, ribbons and other pretty things. Even my eldest son was keen on making his crown. My sister set up a face painting station nearby and had a steady flow of children eager to have their favourite thing painted on their face. I saw flowers, frogs, snakes and even a R2D2 proudly displayed on little cheeks. 

The air was filled with laughter and the sweet smell of lilacs. Even the earth vibrated in response to the merriment. Children splashed magic morning dew onto their faces and took hold of the Maypole with great anticipation. To the sound of fiddling and drums the children carried the maypole in a great procession towards the open field. The pole was lifted and the ribbons handed out to big and little hands. As the children wove around the Maypole the ribbons crisscrossed, it was beautiful chaos. As the ribbons were woven round and round the pace increased and soon the children were running in circles. Even I had the chance to run around the Maypole with Teddy in my arms. Celebrating May Day with our Learning Circle is so beautiful and magical. We are so blessed to be part of this amazing community. I hope you all had a lovely May Day.
