Garden Journal (vol. 8)








A great deal of change happens in a garden over the span of two weeks. Thanks to my husband's attentiveness while I was away the gardens are in good shape. With the hot weather that we're having some of the crops are spent. I had to pull out the remaining spinach and radishes which had bolted and were going to seed. Now I have half a bed that's empty and I'm trying to decide what to plant in the space. Any suggestions? 

The tomatoes are loving the heat but I have to keep a careful eye out for sucker shoots and lop them off immediately before they take over. The pepper plants are starting to produce and the basil makes me swoon every time I walk by. There is abundance of lettuce, kale and Swiss chard. I had to pick out some baby beets, carrots and parsnips in order to make room for the plants to grow. My eldest wanted to roast the root vegetables and they made a delicious lunch.

After building our four raised garden bed I made one other small garden bed in the corner of the yard. It was an afterthought, a place to plant my extra tomato and pepper plants that didn't fit in the other beds. I also added some zucchini, pole beans and sunflowers. Now it happens to be one of my favourite beds.

  1. Your garden looks great! I would suggest planting delicata squash, if you don't already have that variety planted. It is one of our favourite squashes. The skin is very thin so it can be eaten as well. A simple recipe is to slice it lengthwise, scoop out the seeds, cut the squash into half moon pieces, toss with olive oil, cumin, salt and pepper and bake in the oven. And our girls both love it! Bon Appétit!

  3. Everything looks so great. Kudos to your hubby for keeping it all in good shape while you were gone...I rely on my hubby to do the same thing while the little man and I are away.

  4. Wow. What a harvest already!
    You have a long enough season left that you could plant something like beans that don't take as long as squashes but love the heat.
