Five Favourite Environmental Health Discoveries

Over the last week I've been recovering from nasal septal reconstruction surgery. It's been a slow recovery but each day I feel a little better. The first few days after the surgery were murky, thanks to drugs I was taking, and I barely moved from the couch. I did watch plenty of shows online and visit a variety of blogs and websites. Here are my five favourite environmental health themed discoveries from the last week.

March Against Monsanto is happening May 25, 2013 WORLDWIDE (Find the nearest march near you) and the purpose is to bring awareness to the problems surrounding genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and to advocate for more research and transparency. Monsanto, an agricultural company, is the leading producer of genetically modified seeds and herbicides. Currently a large portion of all our canola, beet sugar, corn and soy is genetically engineered. Unfortunately research on the effects of eating genetically modified food is limited and the few studies that have been done point towards increased risk in tumours, birth defects and infertility. Talk about being treated like living lab rats! There are also significant risks to the environment when introducing genetically modified organism into nature.

People are confused about GMOs. I am often told that everything is genetically modified, that we've been cross breeding plants and animals for ages, so why all the fuss? But wait, hybrid and GMO are very different things and the Food Renegade does a great job explaining the difference in her recent post Hybrid Seeds vs GMOs.

This video is a must see if you buy and eat salmon. You've probably heard that eating wild salmon is healthier than farmed salmon but have you ever thought about the impact salmon farming has on the ecosystem and on wild salmon populations. Before you curse the sky-rocketing prices of wild salmon check out this eye opening video.

I enjoy a good Ted Talk and Let's Talk Crap was an interesting one. Did you know that 2.5 million people worldwide have no adequate toilet? Really.

Love this magazine. It's holistic, practical and advert free!
