Winter Doldrums

Our home is nestled in a semi-arid valley. The summers are hot and sunny but the winter months are forever overcast. Throughout winter the whole valley gets filled with layers upon layers of clouds that never seem to leave. Occasionally sunshine does break through and when this happens we rush out to soak up those warm sunny rays.

We are doing our best to stave off the winter doldrums with various projects and plenty of reading. My husband has been building a three bin compost while I have been free motion quilting my first twin size quilt. When I get really desperate I putty holes in the walls and prime them. Now our walls are covered in white patches and need to be repainted. At least it gives me something to do.

And reading, lots of reading. After a while I have to ban certain books because I just can't bring myself to read Pus in Boots for the fifth time in a row. Today I purchased Volume Eleven of Alphabet Glue and I intend to slowly read through it tonight. I always enjoy discovering the new books and activities that Annie has to share. Or course I will be reading my new Alphabet Glue while listening to Alt-J, a British indie rock quartet that I can't stop listening to! If you listen to the album (which you should!) make sure you listen to the whole album from beginning to end.

While our family is enjoying the slower pace that winter brings I can't deny that I am eager for spring to arrive. I want to build our garden beds, dig in dirt and plant all the seeds that I recently ordered from West Coast Seeds and Salt Spring Seeds. Just when I think I can't wait any longer I remind myself of my word for the year: patience.

  1. Oh yes, we are eagerly awaiting spring too. It is time to get my hands dirty in the garden :)

  2. But, think on how privileged you are to be Canadian! How our forefathers suffered through endless winters that we would have the gift of suffering through endless winters.
