Five Natural Teething Remedies

All babies respond to teething differently. With some babies you don't know they're teething until you notice teeth in their mouth. This was the case with our first. Other babies have a difficult time with teething. These babies get noticeably fussy, drool a lot, sport bright red cheeks and occasional have a low grade fever. This was babies number two and three.

Breastmilk. If you are able to breastfeed your little one try offering breastmilk more often. Breastmilk has a pain reducing effect on babies that is becoming more well known. Also, if you notice that your baby is waking up more at night while teething, don't despair, it will pass and breastmilk might help your baby fall back asleep more quickly.

A Baltic Amber teething necklace. Baltic amber is a natural resin that releases a substance known as succinic acid when warmed by the skin. Succinic acid helps reduce pain and inflammation and can be really helpful for teething babies. I have used Baltic amber necklaces for Sweetpea and Teddy. At first I was sceptical, but the necklace really seems to help sooth the pain that comes with teething and other ailments. Be sure to order a Baltic amber necklace from a reputable seller to ensure you're getting the authentic stuff.

Chilled, hard fruit or vegetables. Try giving your baby a large piece of carrot to gnaw on. Teddy loves this. He doesn't have teeth so it won't break into pieces. If you're worry that your baby might break off a piece, which can happen with apples and celery even if your baby doesn't have teeth, put the food item into a baby mesh feeder.

A wet washcloth. Wet a clean washcloth with cold water and give it to your teething baby. The cool cloth will help sooth the baby's gums while giving him (or her) something to chomp on. You could even put it in the freezer for up to thirty minutes to give it a bit more chill.

Teething toys. Choose teething toys that are free of any harmful chemicals like BPA or phthalates. A few favourites in our home are Sophie, Pure Baby toothbrush and natural wood teething toys like these.

  1. Love this! Thank you! I didn't know that about the breastmilk. That is amazing. Most of my kids were the kind that you didn't notiice till the teeth were in thier mouth. But my youngest daughter, wow, when she was teething the world knew! She was the first to get an amber necklace!

  2. I have been having success with the Hyland's teething tablets with Alex. They never did a thing for Luke but they seem to work well for Alex. My boys have such a hard time with teeth. Alex got his first two the week before his first birthday and has been working on his top two for a couple weeks now.

  3. Yes, THANK YOU :) We have been dealing with a very cranky, teething baby the last week and this was just the post I needed. I will definitely be giving my Ducky some carrots - I used to do this, and then forgot. Thanks for the reminders!

  4. My oh my, Teddy never stops growing! I love his chubby cheeks and arms! Oh the joys of teething...now that's one stage of infancy I don't miss. We had a hard time with E, but did find that the necklace and chewing on wooden toys worked to reduce some of the discomfort. Hopefully N is much easier!

  5. A friend of mine just recommended your blog to me at the perfect time! Had a terrible night last night with teething. We do most of what you suggested, but I'm definitely going to get one of those necklaces. Thanks!

  6. These are all great ideas, thanks. The other item we use when our little man is really uncomfortable is ground clove rubbed on the gums. He didn't like it at first, but now he knows that it helps and opens wide to receive it.
