Say No to GM Sweetcorn

Have you heard about the rats, GM sweetcorn and tumors? Yes, those three things are related and here is the study that was recently published. Some people are praising the study, others are criticizing it (read more over on Food Renegade). Perhaps, the study is not perfect, but there is no such thing as a perfect study. The fact that a long term study on the effect of a GM food was done is good. It's a step in the right direction.

We are all part of a massive experimentation. Genetically modified products have been fed to us for a while now yet no long term studies have been done to see if there is any sort of impact of GM foods on our health. With the recent rat study, dubious or not, Russia has suspended imports of the GM sweetcorn and there are rumours that a Europe wide ban might happen too.

So what about Canada? If you've eaten any sweetcorn and it wasn't organic there is a possibility that is was genetically modified. But, the reality is you've probably eaten lots of GM foods already. In Canada GM foods are corn (mostly fed to animals), canola, sugar beets (for sugar processing) and soy (more info on GM foods in Canada here). Yikes! Those things are in a lot of our processed foods.

What do to do? Say no to GM foods! Check out CBAN for more information on GM foods in Canada and take the time to read this article for some great ideas to avoid GM food.

  1. It's always so disturbing to realize that the "people in charge" (ie government) are not stepping up to say no to this type of stuff!! I only wish I could go grocery shopping without wondering if the "fresh" produce I purchase for my family (thinking I am providing them with healthy choices)may/will hurt them in the long run...
