Where Do You Live?

I live here. In this cold Northern part of Canada. This is where I grew up. I left after high school but then returned again after finishing my nursing degree. Both Hubby and I have parents and siblings that live here. Also, housing is affordable. These were our reasons for returning.

But for the last six months I've felt unsettled. I'm not sure why. It could be the weather. The winter has been so long with no end in sight. The piles of snow outside are ridiculous. At this rate Spring won't arrive until the end of April or the beginning of May. For someone that enjoys gardening and walking outside barefoot, sometimes I wonder why I live here. Thinking about living somewhere just a little warmer crosses my mind almost daily. But Hubby has a good job and our family is close... am I just suffering from the grass is greener on the other side syndrome? Or am I hearing a call to move Southernly?

The snow is so high.

  1. Hi! I love the blog. I used to have one, but I had a hard time keeping up with it. I had the same sort of reservations before we moved here - although my sisters both lived here already. But you know what? My grandma moved here soon after, and my parents are following this year. So maybe you could be the catalyst! I am much happier living here, though I do miss our friends up north.
Gardening here is so much different - our crocuses are already up, and the daffodils will be blooming soon (and we're having a cold wet spring). I tell my mom that up north you spend all your time trying to make something (anything!) grow, and here I spend all my time trying to tame my garden so it doesn't look like a jungle!
We spend so much more time outside here, even with all the rain. I hardly wore a heavy jacket at all this year. I love it. I felt so cooped up for 6 months of the year up north.
But we pay the price for it, for sure. For what we sold our large house for you can barely get a 2 bedroom condo here. But, I feel the need to take vacations less - if we want an adventure we just go downtown or up to the mountains. I love living here :)

  2. I can fully relate to this post. Winter life in Latvia is cold, dark and almost depressing. But now with the increase in sunshine the days are more enjoyable.
We lived in Morocco, Africa, for two years. All I longed for was a variation in the seasons. A little change in the trees, a little bit of this and that, that northern climates experience.
Now I want the warmth again...
Yes, it's the green grass syndrome.
Spring does eventually come, just as all the other seasons of life.
    Blessings!
