Autumn Themed Picture Books For Little Ones

Monkey and I have been reading our fair share of autumn themed books over the last week. I'd like to share with you some of our favorites so far.

Mouse's First Fall One cool fall day... Mouse and Minka came out to play! This book is one of Monkey's favorites, and mine too. Buket Erdogan uses bold and beautiful colours to illustrate the story of Mouse and Minka and their discovery of fall. The script is simple and fun and incorporates colours, shapes and play activities into the story line without sounding forced. I'm interested in checking out the other books that are part of this series (Mouse's First Snow, Mouse's First Summer etc.)

Fall leaves fall! All year long, my brother and I wait for out favorite season to come. Can you guess what it is? Fall! This picture book examines the changes in nature that occur during fall. The script is simple and describes the various shapes and colours of leaves in the fall. In the book the children rake up the leave and jump into the pile. Monkey liked this and wanted to give it a try.

Leaves It was his first year... A young bear experiences his first fall. He sees the leaves falling from the trees and tries to put them back on. After a while he grows sleepy and hibernates for the winter. David Ezra Stein illustrates his book using watercolour and bamboo pen giving the pictures an earthy whimsical feel. The story line is easy and gentle.

Up, Up, Up! It's Apple Picking Time "Up, Up, Up! It's apple-picking time." Mama's voice tickles my ear, whispers me awake. The storyline in this book is more complex than the others reviewed above, but Monkey still enjoyed it (I suspect it has something to so with all the apple picking we did in early September). The story follows a young family and they visit their grandparents' orchard to pick and sell apples.  

It's Fall (Celebrate the Seasons) I skip and swish through autumn leaves. They crunch and crackle under my feet and whoosh and whirl all around me. Although It's Fall is a little too complex for Monkey right now, I liked how the book focused on an array of autumn changes. Initially there is an emphasis on leaves but then the book discusses migrating geese, hibernation, weather, seeds and fall planting. There is also a section in the back of the book on nature activities to do in the fall, and I'm hoping to try a few out with Monkey in the next week.
